Biographical / Historical

Marvel Comics was founded in 1939 by Martin Goodman under the name Timely Comics. During the Timely Comics period, the company created three main superhoes: the Human Torch, Namor the Sub-Mariner and Captain America. The company experienced a decline in the 1950s as interest in comic books faded. However, they saw new success beginning in the early 1960s with the creation of The Fantastic Four by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. They went on to create such enduring characters as Spider-Man, Thor, Ant Man, Iron Man and the X-Men and Stan Lee became one of the best known names in comics.

DC Comics was founded in 1939 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson under the name National Allied Publications. The company created two series of comic books, Action Comics and Detective Comics, from which the later name of DC Comics came. Action Comics introduced the character of Superman in 1938 and Detective Comics introduced Batman in 1939 and enjoyed widespread popularity. DC Comics began the revival of comic books in 1960 with the creation of the Justice League of America and went on to create the popular hero The Flash in 1965.
