Emma Echols papers

Born in Craigsville (Lancaster County), S.C., on February 20, 1825, William Leonidas Faulkner became a Deputy Surveyor in SC on October 15, 1849. Faulkner served in the 17th South Carolina Volunteers, Company I, during the Civil War. At the Battle of the Crater in Petersburg, Va., July 30, 1864, Union forces captured Faulkner. He was listed on a roll of POW's at Point Lookout, Md on August 5, 1864. From there, he was sent to Elmira, NY POW camp on August 12 and died there of typhoid fever on September 7, 1864. His effects were one pair of shoes, one hat, and one pocket book. The last letter his wife, Isabel, received was written shortly before his capture, dated July 23, 1864. He was buried in the Elmira cemetery, grave no. 309. Faulkner first married Elizabeth Rebecca Baker (d. 1854), who died five months after the birth of their daughter, Martha Lucinda "Lucy or Sis" Faulkner. He then married Elizabeth Isabella “Isabel” Craig (1831-1910) in 1858. [Some records have listed her as Issa Craig, affectionately called "Lizzy"] They had a son, Samuel "Buddy" Davis Faulkner, born May 1, 1861. Following her husband's death in the war, Isabel Faulkner married Samuel Calvin Reid (1822-1898) and moved to Mecklenburg County, N.C. They had two sons, including John Calvin Reid (1869-1952), the father of Emma Reid Echols (1903-2002). [Echols is the granddaughter of Isabel Faulkner Reid].
