Biographical / Historical

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Energy Conservation Task Force was a non-governmental organization of volunteers created in 1973 with the goal of conserving energy in Charlotte and the surrounding area in response to the OPEC Oil Embargo. The main focus of the task force was to encourage carpooling for businesses and individuals. They distributed 50,000 brochures and asked recipients to fill them out, which would then allow the task force to match individuals with others who lived and worked nearby so that they could carpool and save fuel. The task force also created the Public Transportation Committee with the goal of encouraging the use of public buses in the city and establishing more park-and-ride stations at churches and shopping centers around town. They also presented programs about fuel conservation to various clubs in the city and created an award system for companies and employees who reached conservation standards set by the task force.
