Scope and Contents

This series contains newspaper clippings primarily from The Charlotte News and The Charlotte Observer that document Swann's passage through the courts. Also documented are the efforts of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education to desegregate the schools in 1965 in compliance with the 1964 Civil Rights Act; public reaction to the desegregation plans and to the closing of some all-black schools; the initial filing of the Swann suit; and a related desegregation case in Richmond.
