Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection contains items created by Richard Peoples (1790-1870), his siblings, children and grandchildren and neighbors in Providence Township. The material was created in Peoples' capacity as a plantation owner, postmaster, general store owner and community banker. There is a large assortment of deeds and payment receipts from neighbors and relatives in Providence Township and particularly Hemphill's Store. There are several handwritten letters that were received at the Hemphill's Store post office as well as some that were written to Peoples by friends and relatives. There are also several lists of goods bought at stores in Peoples' neighborhood and subscription payments for newspapers such as the Mecklenburg Jeffersonian and Western Democrat. The collection contains a poem about the Mecklenburg Volunteers in the Mexican-American War and payments made by citizens of the county for their support. Finally, there are several pages of insurance payments to the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, which was located in Raleigh and operated from 1849 until it collapsed at the end of the Civil War. Some of the insurance policies in this collection may have been taken out on slaves due to the cost of the premiums, however, this cannot be said for certain. Some of the family names found in this collection are: Peoples, Hunter, Rea, Alexander, McLaughlin, Harris, Black, Sharpe, Kirkpatrick, Springs, Hood, Grier and Wallace.
